Leagues join football forces

Essendon District and Western Region football leagues will again join forces in women’s football.

The two leagues ran a successful joint girls’ competition for a number of years, which then expanded from one age group to three – now the two leagues will have a joint women’s competition this year.

With AFL Victoria handing control of women’s football to local leagues, the two leagues decided to combine to ensure there are enough teams for the new competition.

At this stage, the women’s league should have 12 teams, eight from the EDFL and four from the WRFL, a mixture of new and established sides, while a couple of clubs will field their lower grade sides.

VFL side VU Spurs will field their fourth side in the competition, while Pascoe Vale’s reserves will also run out in the joint competition

EDFL’s Sunbury Lions, which played in Victorian Women’s Football League’s division 2 last season, along with former VWFL north west teams Roxburgh Park and Jacana which also look like they will also field sides again.

Keilor and Craigieburn have new sides, along with Glenroy, which has Collingwood forward Moana Hope on the coaching panel.

From the WRFL, there are two existing and two new teams. North west reigning premiers Manor Lakes, along with Glenorden, also from north west division, will again field sides. Caroline Springs and Tarneit will field teams for the first time.

The two leagues will have separate youth girls, under-15 and under-12 competitions for the first time.
