Brimbank council has more women on it than any other local government in the state … and that puts a spotlight on what’s meant by women’s business.
Women’s Health West and Brimbank council have joined forces to break down the barriers preventing more women participating in local sports.
WHW chief executive Dr Robyn Gregory said there are important flow-on effects from women’s participation.
“We know that participation in sports allows women and girls to build a healthy sense of belonging,” Dr Gregory said.
“This project should see some really positive outcomes for women and girls in the west, outlining some practical commitments to get more women and girls involved in sport across Melbourne’s west.”
The project will identify key ways agencies and government can respond to the diverse needs of women and girls in the western region.
Brimbank mayor John Hedditch said gender equality was a key plank of council.
“Brimbank council … [is] advocating keenly for greater participation of women in sport,” Cr Hedditch said. “The council will work with the project partners to develop a region-specific action plan focused on how we can reduce barriers and increase participation,” he said, adding that talks are under way with Football Federation Victoria and AFL Victoria.
