Whittlesea Ranges ring the changes

A sense of predictability no longer remains for the Whittlesea Ranges.

One of the top sides in the National Premier League 2 west last season, the Ranges have lost a huge chunk of that playing group – including go-to sharpshooter Atilla Ofli .

The departures left Ranges coach Vinko Buljubasic and the club’s recruiters with a lot of work in the off season to get new players to the club.

Buljubasic says they have recruited well and are keen to improve on their fourth place finish.

“There have been a lot of forced changes because of departures,” he said ahead of the season opener against Melbourne Victory’s NPL outfit on Sunday.

“We’ve had 10 players go and we’ve signed nine players – so it’s going to be a pretty different line up. “We’re pretty confident that we can do well.”

The biggest departure has been that of goal-scoring machine Ofli, who has moved to Hume City.

Ofli scored 32 goals last season, more than half the Ranges goals, to lead the NPL2 west goal scoring.

Buljubasic said this season the side would look to have a more even spread up front.

“Atilla will be missed, but we’ve recruited players who can score,” he said.

“The goals will be shared between several players. Chris Talajic from Melbourne Knights has been doing well at training.

Ross Frame comes across from Dandenong City and Matthew Conversano and Thomas Barforosh can also score. The opposition will be surprised.”

The Ranges back half will also look different. Among the changes is Phil Petrovski taking on the goalkeeping, while Adam Centofanti and Janiel Silva will play crucial roles up back.

Despite the chances, Buljubasic said he was still confident of challenging for the title.

The Ranges spent most of last season on top of the ladder before fading late to slip to fourth.

In three practice matches against NPL sides, including newly promoted top division side St Albans Saints, the Ranges have recorded victories.

“Practice matches are one thing, but being ready round one is much more important,” Buljubasic said.

“It’s only a slight indication. We’ve been trying to play well and play together as a team.

“After finishing fourth, expectations are high. We were on top for most of the year before we fell.

“We’re not looking in the past now. I think we can be a better team this year.”

The Ranges match against Melbourne Victory is being held at 3pm at Epping Stadium, with free entry for everyone.

The NPL 2 season kicks off this weekend, with the NPL season starting the following weekend.
