Westgate on the up

Westgate still has plenty of room for improvement as it continues to impress in the FV state league 1 north-west competition.

Sitting fourth after 13 rounds in its first season in the division after being promoted this season, Westgate has been really competitive and matching it with the top sides.

Coach Jim Gacovski said things were tracking along nicely with six wins and four draws among their results.

“We’re not going too bad,” he said. “We’ve had a couple of hiccups on the way, but that is football.

“We should be right to bounce back this week.

“I’m never happy, I think the side has the experience to go even further. We’re pretty content at the moment.”

Gacovski said defensively was the area that they thought they could improve on most to continue sticking with the top sides.

He said they were working hard on the track to ensure they stop conceding silly goals.

Gacovski said the club was keen to continue to keep pushing up the ladder and being among the mix for promotion.

“The club is very ambitious and we want to push to be number one,” he said.

“We take it one week at a time and we can do the best we can throughout the year to push for the top.”

Gacovski said they had a lot of confidence in the group that they belong at this level.

Westgate faced Corio on Saturday, after deadline.

Corio entered the match in 10th spot.

Westgate got the 1-0 win.

Gacovski said they were looking forward to the match, having lost the previous round to Whittlesea United, which jumped them on the ladder.

“It will be a tough game,” he said. “We don’t take anyone for granted in this competition.

“We beat them 2-1 last time.”
