Western Jets run out of fuel

Western Jets slumped to a fifth straight loss on Saturday and kissed goodbye their TAC Cup finals hopes.

The Jets’ season crash landed with a 62-point loss to premiership contenders Dandenong Stingrays at Shepley Oval.

It was yet another game when the Jets had to make do without a number of their private school stars, leaving them severely undermanned.

They were competitive for a half but could not sustain it.

The half-time deficit was 26 points before the Stingrays put the foot down with eight goals to three in the second half.

Brodie Romensky was named best for the Jets – not for the first time. He has been in sizzling form since representing Vic Metro at the under-18 national championships with his tackling pressure and link-up play a feature.

Oscar Junker, Ryan Carter and Wilson Berry also impressed for the Jets, while Billy Sullivan and Tristan Xerri snared two goals apiece.

The Jets will merely be playing for pride next time they take to the field, against Bendigo Pioneers at Queen Elizabeth Oval on August 14.

In better news, the Western Jets will have three players – under-18 championships All-Australian Daniel Venables, Judah Dundon and Oscar Junker – attend the 2016 AFL draft combine.

To be one of the 80 players selected, a player needs to have been nominated by at least five AFL clubs.

The players will converge at Etihad Stadium in October for a series of tests to assess athletic traits, football skills and even personality and character.
