Western United’s tough run of form has continued with another disappointing result on Sunday, this time against Adelaide United in the A-League.
Last season’s champions have found the going tough early this season and have just one point from five games.
On Sunday, Western United rued missed opportunities in the first half as Adelaide piled on three goals of their own.
Nicolas Milanovic came off the bench and reduced the margin back to two goals, before Ben Halloran scored Adelaide’s fourth.
Dylan Pierias scored a second for Western United, but it was too little, too late as they lost 4-2.
United coach John Aloisi said they should be getting more out of the games than they have so far this season.
“We had 24 shots to their 10, four on target to our 11, they win 4-2,” he said.
“Immediate reflection, every time the opposition is getting a chance, they’re scoring.
“That’s down to some of our defensive fragilities at the moment and individual errors that are costing us and it cost us again.
“Because of the amount of chances we are creating and should be scoring, we still scored two, you should never lose a football game.
“We have to make sure that we don’t drop our heads too much.”
Aloisi said having five key players out was having an impact, with players getting games who wouldn’t be if they had a full squad available.
None of those five players are expected to be back for this week’s match with Wellington Phoenix.
The match is the last before a break due to the World Cup.
Aloisi said the break comes at a good time to allow them to get players fit and ready for selection.
He said the group needs to come together now and this is a really good opportunity for that and show what they are made of.
