United Khalsa rapidly building

A hockey club in Melbourne’s north is quickly becoming a go to club for people looking to return to the game.

Based out of Craigieburn the United Khalsa Hockey Club has fielded both junior and senior sides for the first time this season.

Senior player Ravish Sran was really starting to take off. The senior side is playing in Hockey Victoria’s metro B north-west competition. They’ve won two of their three games.

“We only have one senior team, but will hopefully have two or three teams next season,” he said.

“We started with 14 players on the team sheet in our first game and our second match we had 32 players wanting to play.

“We’re attracting a lot of players to the club.”

The club was set up by Inderjeet Sandhu, who is the club’s secretary. His idea was to give people who may have played hockey in their home countries, somewhere to play.

“We’re a community club and have a lot of people who have migrated from India. Hockey is really big in India.

“In Punjab, hockey is in our genes. Our secretary roped in a lot of players who haven’t played in years.

“Most of the side is from Indian background, but we want to expand and anyone is welcome to come and play.”

Sran said after a competitive start to the season, they were hoping they would be in the mix come the end of the season.
