Keilor Thunder’s youth women’s championship winning coach is stepping up to coach the club’s National Basketball League 1 South women’s side next year.

The Thunder announced on Wednesday that Trevor Burnette had been appointed coach for next season.

He replaces Tom Bandilovski, who had coached the side since 2017. Under Bandilovski the side went from a Big V division 1 side to a state championship.

He then led the side this year as the club moved in the NBL1 South competition.

The club said on social media they were excited about what Burnette would bring to the side.

“Coming off a VYCW [Big V youth championship women] and under-18 [Victorian Junior Basketball League] VC Reserve Championship this season, Trevor’s experience and wealth of knowledge will ensure that our Women’s program will maintain a high standard and a winning culture.”

Burnette said he was excited by the new role.

“I’m so honoured to be appointed the Keilor women’s NBL1 head coach,” he said. ”I’m so grateful to be part of such an amazing club both in the senior and junior pathways. Thank you to KBA for trusting me with this appointment and I’m super excited to get to work with the NB1 women.”

Burnette has coached at a number of clubs before coming to Keilor, having started his coaching career in America.

The Thunder finished in 12th spot this year with 10 wins and 12 losses.

The side took a while to get used to the competition, but produced some good results with a young playing group.

Bandilovski said during the season that it had taken a while for the side to adjust to the tempo of playing at that level.
