Sunshine United pays for patchy batting

Sunshine United has lost ground on the top two in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division.

United was made to pay for its patchy batting innings.

The Tigers could only muster 161 – a target which opponents Seddon had little trouble chasing down in the one-day game at Selwyn Park on Saturday.

Roshan Anuruddha and Leigh Sheridan did their best to lift United to a strong total. The pair combined for 97 for the third wicket.

Anuruddha was the aggressor in the partnership, making 61. Sheridan was a calming influence en route to 33.

Both Anuruddha and Sheridan went out with the score on 127, which sparked a collapse in the United batting order.

The Tigers lost their last eight wickets for 34.

Seddon passed the target with three overs to spare. Damith Priyadarshana led the way for the Dockers with 57.

Thomas Duxson was the pick of the United bowlers with 2-26 off eight.

United will make the trip to St Albans in the final two-day game before Christmas, starting on Saturday.

United was also in action on Sunday in the Cricket Victoria Regional Big Bash, winning through to the next stage.

They beat Geelong City in the qualifying finals, before beating Westmeadows in the semi finals.

Meanwhile in other VTCA results, St Albans is licking its wounds after losing to bottom side Keilor by six wickets at Kings Park. The Saints made a competitive 9-171 off 40 overs, led by Buddika Hasaranga (52) and Simon Lambert (40).

It was just not enough for the Saints bowlers to defend as Keilor passed the target with two overs to spare.

In division 1 west, Deer Park’s four match losing streak is over after beating Laverton by five wickets at John McLeod Reserve.

Set 171 for victory, Angelo Emmanuel led the way to victory for Deer Park with 70 not out.

In division 3, Sunshine held firm in third spot on the ladder with a six-wicket win over Seabrook at Dempster Park.

Sunshine Heights went down by eight wickets to East Keilor, even after Mohsin Abbas (74) and Saman Gonawala (57) had made it to 7-185 off their 40 overs.

In division 4, there were wins for Grand United, St Andrews and Sydenham Hillside.
