After opening the season with two draws, Sunshine George Cross has broken through for its first victory of the PS4 NPL2 West season.

The Georgies were in command from start to finish in a 2-1 win over Werribee City at Chaplin Reserve on Saturday.

Only in the dying stages, when City pegged a goal back through Maselas Lian Bawi Thang in the 92nd minute, did the Georgies have something to sweat over.

Otherwise, they had the upper hand from the moment Souheil Azagane broke the deadlock in the 35th minute. Jagajeet Shrestha provided the Georgies with an insurance goal 10 minutes later.

The result keeps the Georgies undefeated and on the top half of the ladder ahead of a clash with struggling Bendigo City at Chaplin Reserve on Saturday.

In the top-tier PS4 NPL, St Albans had a horror day against Hume City, losing 5-0 in its home opener at Churchill Reserve.

The Saints made the worst start imaginable, trailing by two goals in the first three minutes. It leaves the newly promoted Saints without a point in two games. They travel on Saturday to face Heidelberg United at Olympic Village.

On Friday night, Melbourne Knights suffered a 2-1 defeat at home to Pascoe Vale at Knight Stadium.

Trailing by a goal at half-time, the Knights hit back through early-season sensation Elvis Kamsoba in the 78th minute. Parity was short-lived as a 10-man Pascoe Vale found a winner through substitute Michael Ferrante just eight minutes later. The Knights have one point from two games and face a daunting away trip to pacesetters Bentleigh Greens at the Kingston Heath Soccer Complex on Friday night.

Meanwhile, Calder United has taken out the inaugural FFV Women’s Community Shield, thumping Heidelberg United 7-1.
