Sunshine derby goes to great Heights in thumping win

The battle of Sunshine has gone the way of Sunshine Heights.

The in-form Heights took care of business with a commanding 143-point win over cellar dweller North Sunshine in their Western Region Football League division 3 clash at Ainsworth Reserve on Saturday.

The Heights have won five of their past six matches to move back into the top four after a week on the outer.

Sunshine Heights’ victory was set up with a scintillating 12-goal-to-nil second quarter.

The Heights ran rampant after quarter-time and kicked 19 of the last 20 goals for the match.

Damien Farnfield’s team had 45 scoring shots to seven, underlining the one-sided nature of the derby.

Albanvale has made a statement in the top-of-the-table clash, becoming the first team to beat Glen Orden this season. The Cobras were resolute defensively, holding the Hawks to just five goals in a 50-point road win. Justin Brook was named best-on-ground for the Cobras and Graeme Catterall kicked three goals.

Braybrook recorded a 74-point win over Wyndham Suns, but dropped out of the top four on percentage. Paul Cutajar-Milosev kicked seven goals for the Brookers, taking his tally to 46 for the season. Bradley Busuttil added six.

In division 1, St Albans has become a giant killer in the past two weeks.

A week after taking down reigning premier Deer Park, the Saints ended ladder leader Altona’s six-game winning run.

The Saints claimed a 10-point victory at Kings Park Reserve that will instill a heap of belief into the Perry Meka-coached side.

Benjamin Said was once again dangerous inside 50 for St Albans, kicking five goals.

Said sits second on the top-flight goalkicker list with 37 goals, just four behind Deer Park spearhead Jase Perkins.

Deer Park put a stop to its two-game losing streak with a 126-point win over newly promoted Point Cook.

Perkins was on fire for the Lions with 10 goals, while Kevin Klix added five.

A rough start hurt Caroline Springs dearly in an otherwise competitive 58-point loss to Spotswood.

The Lakers trailed by 35 points at quarter-time and never seriously threatened, but managed to avoid a blowout against one of the flag fancies.

Sunshine was outplayed by Werribee Districts in a 60-point defeat.

In division 2, there were only three games played after Manor Lakes forfeited its match against Wyndhamvale.

Yarraville Seddon continued its hot form in the match of the day with a 42-point win over Point Cook Centrals.

In other games, Parkside was too strong for North Footscray, winning by 39 points, and West Footscray got over the line by 18 points against Newport.

In Victorian Amateur Football Association Premier C, PEGS had a day to forget, losing by 92 points to Mazenod.
