State championships a success

Crowds flocked to John McMahon Reserve on the weekend as Sunbury Softball Association hosted the under-19 state softball championships.

Holding the event for the first time, on average 400 people attended the event across the two days.

Association secretary Catherine Kelly said the two days went off without a hitch.

“It was pretty hectic, but it was awesome to see all our hard work on display,” she said.

We’ve obviously attended a lot of championships before so we knew what to expect and were thrilled with the response from the local community.”

Waverley took out the women’s title beating Casey 10-0 in the final. Teams from Sunshine, Werribee, Knox and Dandenong also competed.

In the men’s competition, Casey was crowned state champions after beating Werribee in the final 11-5. Albury-Wodonga made the trip down to Melbourne to compete, joining Sunshine and Keilor Park in the five team men’s competition.

Kelly said after the success of this year, the association would look to host further events.

“We started off with the smallest of the state championships which are held and if we can get more facilities, we’ll start to look at holding competitions, like the open divisions, which have about 20 teams competing,” she said.

“The support from Hume Council and local businesses who got behind us was really good. It was nice to see the ground full of supporters on both days.
