St Albans remains too far South on the ladder

Pressure is building on newly-promoted St Albans Saints in the top-flight National Premier League Victoria.

The struggling Saints remain rock bottom of the league with just one point to show from five games.

It has been a tough initiation for the Saints, who have had to face two of the top three teams on the ladder and four of the top eight.

The Saints were no match for South Melbourne at Churchill Reserve on Sunday, going down 2-0.

South, the sleeping giant over the first month of the campaign, was too good to stay down for too long and the Saints caught them on the wrong day.

Goals to Milos Lujic and Leigh Minopoulos saw South secure victory and delay St Albans’ dream of a breakthrough win for at least another round.

While the Saints have a change of scenery in the FFA Cup this weekend, they will have another unenviable assignment in front of them when they return to league action and have to travel to Bentleigh Greens in round six.

In NPL2 West, Sunshine George Cross consolidated third spot with a 3-1 win over Springvale White Eagles on Saturday.

After scores were deadlocked at one-apiece at half-time, the Georgies came out breathing fire in the second half with goals to Dom Falla and Teddy Yabio.

It was a spicy last 45 minutes with seven of nine yellow cards handed out in the second half, but none resulting in red.

Sunshine’s next league test will be against Melbourne Victory youth on March 25, but they will enter the FFA Cup this weekend.

Meanwhile, Melbourne Knights played against Bulleen Lions on Monday night.
