Having secured its first point since May, Spring Hills is aiming at the winners’ list in FFV state league 4 west.
It’s been tough for Spring Hills in recent times. While on field struggles have put the team into the relegation zone it also parted ways with coach Darren Traynor.
On Saturday, the side showed that not all is lost this season as it fought out a 1-1 draw with fourth-placed Sebastopol Vikings.
Captain Tom Markovski says things are looking rosier for the Stallions with four rounds remaining.
“We have recently departed with our coach and we’re learning how to play a different system,” he said.
“We thought the change was due – we weren’t playing too crash hot and some of our senior players had gone away on holidays.
“We decided that we would look to start playing more of our under-20 players.”
David Maglovski who was reserves coach at NPL side Werribee City last year, has taken over as coach.
Markovski said the decision to play more of the younger players was showing benefits.
“They probably need another year at the lower level, but they’ve come in and played well,” he said.
On Saturday, the Stallions got the opener through Dylan Magro in the first half. The Vikings levelled the scores after the break to secure a draw.
“They are a top-four side and a good team,” Markovski said.
“We led early but couldn’t hold on and finished with a draw. It was a well-deserved draw.”
While happy to get the point, Markovski said his side needed to win games to avoid relegation.
The bottom two teams at the end of the season will be relegated. The Stallions are second from the bottom. Bottom side Maribyrnong Green has already withdrawn from the competition.
Only six points separates the Stallions and Truganina Hornets, who are eighth.
“We have four winnable games,” Markovski said of the road ahead.
“We play sides that are towards the bottom of the ladder.”
The first of those matches, on Saturday, is against local rival Melton Phoenix.
Phoenix’s match against Balmoral on Saturday was washed out.
