St Albans have made a stunning turnaround from its bottom-placed finish last National Premier League (NPL) season by defeating the reigning ladder leaders, Avondale 1-0 away from home on Saturday afternoon.
The win marks Avondale’s first loss this season and third loss in their past 26 NPL matches, highlighting just how impressive the Saints’ victory was.
It was Saints’ Ivan Razumic scoring in the first half to give his team the lead on the road.
The Saints finished in last place last season with the club recording just two wins and four draws.
Relegation looked a real possibility for the Saints until the season was brought to an end early due to Covid-19.
Three games into the new season, the Saints have already made an incredible turnaround, matching the number of wins they had last season.
Speaking to St Albans coach Kruni Razov on Friday about the aims for the season, he said he wanted to take it one game at a time and be competitive every week.
“Every game as it comes, we want to be as competitive as we can in every game and see where it takes us,” Razov said.
“We will analyse it at the halfway mark and we will make a decision from there, do we go for it or are we fighting relegation or are we happy to just finish mid-table.”
The Saints will face undefeated South Melbourne in their next match at Churchill Reserve in St Albans on Sunday.
