Saints climb to top five

St Albans moved into the Western Region Football League’s top five with a hard fought 29-point win over Albion at the weekend.

After trailing early in the division 1 contest, the Saints produced a stunning second quarter in which they booted six goals.

That was enough to turn a 10-point deficit into a two-goal lead at the main break.

From there, St Albans continued to hold the Cats at bay, maintaining the advantage throughout the third term before six goals in the final quarter became the icing on the cake.

Michael Spooner was a standout for the Saints on the forward line with five goals, while Leigh Brennan chipped in with three.

The 14.13 (97)-9.14 (68) win is the Saints’ second in three weeks.

After a slow start to the 2016 campaign, St Albans is now just one game behind third-placed Werribee Districts.

In what will be a huge clash, the two sides meet on May 28 after this weekend’s interleague clash with the Ballarat League.

In other weekend results, Deer Park continued its slow start to the new season, going down to Altona on Saturday.

Despite leading at the final break, the Lions could manage just one goal in the last quarter. That opened the door for the Vikings, who booted three goals in the final term to seal the 8.11 (59)-7.8 (50) win.

Deer Park’s Jase Perkins booted four goals and was the Lions’ only multiple goalscorer.

Saturday’s loss opened up a one-game break between second-placed Deer Park and top-of-the-ladder Hoppers Crossing.

The Warriors enjoyed a 9.9 (63)-6.7 (43) win over Sunshine at the weekend.
