Regague announced captain

Western United have started off their National Premier League division 3 season in style defeating Nunawading City 3-0 at George Cross on Sunday.

The home side scored two goals in two minutes midway through the first half to gain the early lead before adding another one to the scorecard in the 77th minute, making it 3-0.

It was a great way for the club to continue building off their success last season where they finished in third position with eight wins, five draws and one loss.

Western United also confirmed that centre-back Jalil Regague will captain the club’s NPL 3 senior men’s team for 2022.

Regague mainly featured in the Under 21’s team in United’s inaugural NPL season in 2021 although he has been able to develop and become a regular member and strong leader of the senior side.

“It’s a big privilege, being here last year and not being in the team as much, and now this year I’ve got a chance to show what I can do,” Regague said.

“To get the armband is a big honour and hopefully I can live up to what it takes.”

The process to selecting the NPL 3 seniors men’s captain was conducted through a player vote with coaching staff identifying with the playing group a list of values that a club captain should embody.

Players then voted with Regague the clear winner.

The 21-year-old said it was a great feeling to get the recognition.

“It’s nice, people see the work you put in and think that I’m at the standard and the level we have to be at,” he said.

“I can help people and kind of show them the way, it’s nice for all of the hard work you put in in pre-season to pay off.”
