Sydenham Park will need a bit of luck if it’s to earn promotion in FV state league 1 north-west competition.

The Reds sit in third spot, nine points off top, but only four points behind second.

With at least two teams set to be promoted, the Reds are still aiming to finish in the top two.

Coach Denii Lisolajski said they hadn’t down their hopes any help in their previous match against second placed Essendon Royals.

“We shot ourselves in the foot last week,” he said. “We missed opportunities and it cost us in the end.

“With only a few rounds remaining we have got no room for any little mishaps. We [the top teams] all play each other, so every game is meaningful.

“We have to worry about ourselves and do what we can and if others slip up, we will be there to pounce.”

Lisolajski said they had been playing some good soccer and they had been fairly happy with their performances.

He said with every team wanting to beat them, they needed to be switched on every game.

“Our last game was one of those games where we could have had three or four goals in front,” he said.

“The opposition grows a bit more in confidence when you miss shots. Every club wants to beat us know matter where they are on the ladder. Every game is like we’re playing in a grand final.”

Lisolajski said if they fail to get a promotion spot, they will look back to their start of their season when they won just one of their first five games.

Since then they have been one of the best teams in the competition.

“We were 12 or 13 rounds undefeated and we still find ourselves in the position we are in,” he said.

“We could go 17 games with one loss and still miss out on finals. That’s unheard.”

The Reds beat Altona City 3-0 on Saturday.

Lisolajski said the focus for them in the last few rounds was simple.

“Hopefully we can find the back of the net and out put ourselves in front of games,” he said.

“The boys are extremely positive, we just need a bit of luck.”
