PEGS’ finals hopes unravel

The bottom appears to have fallen out of PEGS’ season in Victorian Amateur Football Association Premier C.

The Bombers are shell-shocked after going from genuine finals contenders at the start of July to a team that would be glad of a win.

Four losses on the trot at the wrong end of the season have spoiled PEGS’ plans for September action.

All but the final nail was hammered into the Bombers’ coffin in a disappointing 14-point loss to second-last Peninsula at the Peninsula School on Saturday.

PEGS’ low-scoring trend continued – the team could muster only 55 points.

The Bombers have scored nine goals or less in each of their past four matches.

They have not been a high-scoring team all year, only reaching triple figures on two occasions, but their defence has usually been strong enough to win low-scoring tussles.

But reliance on the backline has caught up with PEGS, so it would seem the side is destined for another season in Premier C.

Adrian Romanyk is one PEGS forward who continues to provide a threat.

He kicked three goals against Peninsula to take his season tally to 57 in 15 games.

He is the only player in the division to pass a half century of goals, with the next best being Old Ivanhoe’s Adrian Del Monte with 46.

PEGS’ mathematical hopes of playing finals will be dashed if the team can’t snap its losing streak against third-last Old Mentonians at PEGS Sporting Fields on Saturday.
