Patchy Keilor punished

Keilor scored just one goal in the second half in its loss to Greenvale, but it was the first half that left co-coach Mick McGuane most frustrated.

The Blues dominated the first half of the Essendon District Football League premier division clash, but only had a 12-point lead to show for it at the main break.

The Blues had a massive 17 scoring shots for the half, but kicked poorly to score 5.12.

McGuane said the game could have been all but over at half-time.

He said the game was a clear example of the type of football they had played all year.

“We’ve played patchy football all year and Saturday is the greatest example of it,” he said.

“We kicked 5.12 in the first half and we could have put them to the sword, but we didn’t and kept them in the game.

“The last two games we’ve had our backs to the wall with injuries, and you have to lean on players, but they’re not cutting the mustard for the whole game.

“We’ve had to expose some younger players – they are OK for parts of the game, but can’t play out games.”

In the second half, the Jets made the most of Keilor’s wasted opportunities, kicking 12 goals to one, to win their fifth game in a row, 16.9 (105)-6.15 (51).

Dean Galea kicked four goals for the Blues, while Jason Williams was named their best.

Full-forward Dean Galea, captain Dylan Joyce, co-coach Luke McGuane and Jordie Grainger all finished the game with injury concerns.

The Blues spent much of the second half with only one player on the bench. That was the last thing the Blues needed, as they already had a long injury list. McGuane said the number of injuries and changes they’d been forced to make had had an impact.

“We’ve failed to have continuity with injury and unavailability,” he said.

“We have anywhere between seven and eight players on the sidelines who would walk into our best side.

“Take that many out of any team and they’ll quickly come back to the pack.”

McGuane said the club would wait until the last moment to give injured players the chance to return for the vital clash with Pascoe Vale.

The reigning premier will enter the match at 3-3, while the Panthers are 2-4.

In other matches, Taylors Lakes and Hillside lost in division 1.

In division 2, it was a tough day for Burnside Heights and Keilor Park, both being on the end of big losses.
