A new state of the art facility to help develop female footballers has opened at Essendon Football Club’s Tullamarine home.

The new facility at the Hangar incorporates four unisex change rooms, a function centre and community education hub.

The high-performance centre will be used as a training base by Essendon’s VFLW team and will house the club’s AFLW team when it comes in later next year ahead of the 2022-23 season.

The community and education facilities will be used for a range of purposes, from training female umpires to encouraging women and girls at all levels, and from all backgrounds, to participate on and off the field.

Paralympics Australia and Western United, which are also based at the Tullamarine location, will also benefit from the facilities.

Tourism, Sport and Major Events Minister Martin Pakula said these new facilities send a powerful message.

“From the grassroots to VFLW and AFLW, women’s footy is booming and we’re making sure women and girls have the facilities they need to be their best.”

Sunbury MP Josh Bull said it’s great that the community will benefit from these new facilities, which will provide a place for training and development and encourage young people to get involved in sport.”

Essendon president Paul Brasher said the facility is now a world-class training and administration centre and a fantastic community asset.
