New North Sunshine president Andrew Scimone is hoping it’s the start of a new era for the Western Region Football League club.
Scimone, who coached the side in 2022 and was set to coach the side again in 2023, was recently announced as the club’s new president.
Scimone admits he was keen to coach again, but when others at the club wanted him to put his hand up for the presidency he decided that was what was best for the club.
“There were people who thought that the club needed a change,” he said.
“I did want to coach, but some of the others nominated me for the presidency. Rob Telfer stepped aside and it left me as the lone wolf.
“Now it’s about getting the ball rolling.”
Scimone knows that he has a big task ahead of him to help get the Roadrunners on the right path.
Their senior men’s side was smashed each week last season, while on field behaviour resulted in senior and reserves matches called off during the year.
The club forfeited its final round matches against Laverton.
Scimone said that they wanted to set the tone this season that they would be able to build on in the future.
He said the behaviour which resulted in matches called off wouldn’t be tolerated and he’s been speaking to the players and spectators involved.
“The club isn’t where we want to be,” he said. “The goal is to get there and set it up for seasons to come.
“This year will be a small step and hopefully things start to take shape behind the scenes and we can have a bit more stability.”
One of Scimone’s first jobs is to find someone to take over the coaching role. Applications closed on Saturday.
He said he had been speaking to connections of his about coming on board, including some with AFL experience.
“I’ve spoken to a few mates and hopefully they’ll throw their hats in the ring,” he said.
“It would be good to have someone who has had experience at VFL [Victorian Football League] level as well.
“The club needs a role model and someone with experience and can set the tone. We can’t keep changing coaches every year.”
Scimone said they had managed to get a few sponsors on board which had been a positive sign.
He said he was keen to get at least 100 social club members and they were keen to get as many people behind them as possible.
