Moonee Valley double in best and fairest

It was a Moonee Valley best and fairest double in the Essendon District Football League division 2 competitions.

Georgia Marsland claimed the women’s best and fairest award, with Bevan Newell named the men’s division 2 best and fairest the following day.

Both players played major roles in their sides finishing on top of the ladder and later being awarded the premiership.

In the division 2 women’s best and fairest, Marsland was the runaway winner on 18 votes. She finished eight votes clear of Fog teammate Charlotte Clayton.

Sunbury Kangaroos’ Harmoni Chivell and Westmeadows duo Sophie Freeman and Kate Sellers finished in third on 18 votes.

Clayton was named the leading goal kicker for that division.

Marsland and Clayton were among six Fog players named in the team of year. Fog coach Dean Rioli was named coach of the year, while Coburg Districts Bianca Hendricks was named captain.

In the men’s division 2 competition, Newell was in front for much of the vote count and the result was wrapped up with several rounds to go. He finished on 19 votes.

He would finish six votes clear of 2018 best and fairest winner Kamen Ogilvie, who came home with a strong back half of the season.

Both Newell and Ogilvie were named in the team of the year.

Half the team of the year came from Moonee Valley and Oak Park, which finished the season equal on wins.

Fog coach Shanon Carroll made it back-to-back coach of the year awards.
