The new Essendon District Football League women’s competition looks set to have 14 teams this year.

After having a combined competition with the Western Region Football League last season, the two leagues have decided to have their own competitions due to the dramatic increase in clubs wanting to field teams.

Last season there was 11 teams in the combined competition, and it this stage that looks to more than double in number across the new competitions.

Keilor, which claimed the premiership last year with an undefeated season, leads the club’s that will field teams in the EDFL competition.

Sunbury Lions, which finished third, along with Craigieburn, Glenroy, Pascoe Vale and Roxburgh Park, will again field teams.

Sunbury Kangaroos, which played in the AFL Goldfields competition last year, has switched competitions and will have a side for a second time.

The Kangaroos finished third in division 1 last season, before losing both their finals.

Aberfeldie, Strathmore, Taylors Lakes, Westmeadows, Hillside, Keilor Park and Burnside Heights are all looking to field teams for the first time.

All sides are still looking for more players.

The season will start on the weekend of April 8 and the regular season will run for 14 rounds.

There will be a top five finals series, with the grand final to be played on the weekend on August 19.
