Lakers upset by Warriors

Hoppers Crossing got just its second win in the Western Region Football League division 1 season, upsetting finals hopeful Caroline Springs.

The Warriors started the game on top, keeping the Lakers goalless in the first quarter.

The Lakers began to work their way back into the game in the out scoring the Warriors, four goals to one.

The Warriors proved they were up for the fight taking back the lead for the three quarter time break.

Inaccuracy cost the Lakers in the last quarter. While they had eight scoring shots for the quarter, they were able to kick just two goals.

It would prove costly, with the Warriors winning 8.11 (59)- 7.15 (57).

William Young was awarded as the Lakers’ best on ground, with Ryan Allan kicking three goals.

The Lakers remain in fifth spot, but are now a game outside the top four.

In division 2, Sunshine crushed the second bottom team North Footscray to lock in a finals spot.

It was a goal fest for the Kangaroos with five players kicking three or more majors. Charly Williams led the way with a six goal haul.

Stuart Purves was best on ground with his three majors in the 24.21 (165)- 7.6 (48) win.

Last placed Braybrook were smashed in its final game for the season.

The Brookers were 142 point losers in the 22.21 (153)-1.3 (9) clash with Wyndhamvale.

Albion had a bye before their finals series begins with a game against Parkside to come.

In division 3, a top two clash did not live up to the hype with second placed Albanvale losing to the Suns by 91 points.

The Cobras will face the Suns again in the first week of finals and will hope to improve on the 23.15 (153)- 9.8 (62) loss.

Sunshine Heights had a big win against local rivals North Sunshine.

The Dragons won 23.13 (151)- 10.10 (70), with Giovanni Raffaele booting seven of their 23 goals.
