Melbourne Knights toppled National Premier League leaders South Melbourne in an upset 2-1 win on Friday evening at Knights Stadium.
Heading into the round 16 game the Knights were in 10th position following a busy schedule of four games in 11 days while South Melbourne was on top with just two losses.
It was Gian Albano who scored in the dying seconds of the game, dribbling through the defence of South and scoring with a dipping ball that found its way over the keeper’s head.
South had scored in the opening minute of the game before Knights equalised the score line in the 10th minute through Mohammad Sumaoro.
On the same night, Green Gully fell short losing 3-1 to Port Melbourne in an important top four clash.
Visitors Port Melbourne opened the scoring account in the sixth minute before Nahuel Bonada equalled the score line seven minutes later.
Port Melbourne then powered home however scoring two second half goals to take away the win putting the Cavaliers into fourth position.
On Sunday afternoon, St Albans were hurt by Avondale in an 11 minute period where they conceded three goals beginning with the first goal in 21st minute.
It proved to be the difference as the Saints ended the game losing 3-0 to the side which they beat previously in the season.
The Saints now sit 11th on the ladder eight points clear of third last Hume City.
In NPL women’s Calder United picked up a 1-0 win over Bulleen Lions, putting them on top of the ladder after Heidelberg United lost in an upset 3-2 game to FV Emerging.
In NPL 3, North Sunshine Eagles fell short 2-0 to Preston Lions on Friday night, giving them one more loss compared to wins this season at five wins, a draw and six loses.
Western United on the other hand picked up a solid 1-0 win over Nunawading City playing away from home.
The win puts them in third position, one point behind Melbourne Victory and six points behind Melbourne City.
