■ The Bulldogs continue to show the kind of composure many diehard supporters are just not accustomed to. On Sunday, they were challenged late in the final quarter by the Eagles and, once again, they stood up and got the four points. They’re winning games and, I’m sure, many admirers around the country. They play a brand of football that is good to watch whatever style of play you prefer. Watching Jake Stringer do his Incredible Hulk impersonation as he bursts out of tackles is well worth the admission price. And it was a great compliment to Marcus Bontempelli that while he was acting captain last week in Easton Wood’s absence, his form didn’t suffer.
■ Local footy is buzzing about the impact Newport Power has made in its first season of senior football in the WRFL. The club is in its 11th year and looks like one of the teams to beat for the Division 3 flag. Division 2 and 3 have byes this week, then Newport will host Tarneit on June 18 in a battle between the top two separated only by percentage. The Power has a perfect record at home ground Bryan Martyn Oval and will be hell bent on keeping that record intact. The club will also host its sixth annual Sportsman’s Lunch at its home ground on Friday, June 24. Special guests will be Daniel Wells, Jordan Lewis and Todd Goldstein with one more name to be added. Tickets are $140 per person and available through katematherson@optusnet.com.au or 0402 216 111. It’s a great day in the footy calendar.
■ Following the WRFL win over Ballarat in the country championships, a number of the boys in the red, white and blue have been named in the Vic metro squad. Josh Bench, Tim Jenkins, Matt Dean, Murray Boyd, Ben Graham, Tim Quick, Braden Ferrari, Jase Perkins and Daniel Castellano all made the squad, as did Brett Jacobs as an assistant coach. It’s also good to see six Western Jets in the under-18 metro squad for the championships which are under way now. Congratulations to William Berry, Daniel Venables, Brodie Romensky, Brock McGregor, Lachlan Fogarty and Oscar Junker.
■ This weekend sees the annual Big Freeze at the MCG to raise funds and awareness of Motor Neurone Disease, the crippling condition of which Neale Daniher has become the public face. Do what you can to help by buying a beanie or donating to the fund.
