■ The VFL teams of the west have been facing off in recent weeks, with Werribee defeating Footscray and Williamstown just getting up over Port Melbourne. This week Werribee will tackle Williamstown under lights on Saturday night at Avalon Airport Oval. In the intense rivalry between these two clubs, Williamstown has won 44 of the 73 games played. Both clubs have new presidents in 2016 – Martin Carter (Werribee) and Freddy Hall (Williamstown) – and both clubs have very high expectations for the season. In a bit of a return to the old days, there will be three games on Saturday – TAC Cup at 1pm (Geelong Falcons v Western Jets), the development game at 4pm and the seniors at 7pm.
■ Werribee Centrals have experienced a tough start to the GDFL season, recording a single win after five rounds. But a notable slice of history has been created at the club via the O’Malley family. Callum O’Malley, 17, made his senior debut recently against East Geelong, becoming the club’s first third-generation player. His father, Peter, played during the late 1980s and his grandad, Mick, was a member of the Centurions’ inaugural side way back in 1969. Well done to the family on this milestone and to the club. Isn’t it great to see? That kind of loyalty and commitment is exactly what grassroots football is all about.
■ Werribee Districts will take on Deer Park this week in WRFL senior division 1 at John McLeod Reserve for the first time since the 2015 grand final. The Tigers will remember that day for all the wrong reasons and will be keen to exorcise some demons.
■ Speaking of Werribee Districts, the Birdcage at Werribee Racing Club will be the place to be on Friday, May 20, for a sports night with Werribee coach Paul Chapman, Pies star Dane Swan and myself. ■ Further to last week’s piece on the oldest golfers in the west – and, please, keep them coming in – I reckon Norm Higham might just take the honours. He has been a member at Kooringal since 1968, plays at least twice a week and will be 94 in November.
