Keilor’s coming home

Keilor is set to field two women’s sides in the Essendon District Football League this season.

Having split their teams across the Northern and Essendon District football leagues last season, the Blues have made the decision to bring their top side back to their local league.

The top side made a grand final in the NFL division 1 competition last season, while their EDFL team finished seventh and was knocked out in the first week of the finals.

Blues’ female president Warren Grunden said it was the right time to bring the top side back to the EDFL.

The EDFL competition is set to expand to two divisions with a number of clubs looking to field women’s sides for the first time.

“We wanted to bring the side back to the EDFL,” he said.

“It’s our intention to field two sides again, one in the premier division and one in division 1. The EDFL is getting stronger and levelled off a bit, it’s the right time to come back and support the local league.

“It’s the right fit for the club.”

The Blues have had instant success since starting it’s women’s program, with a perfect season in their first year in the combined EDFL and Western Region competition, before a NFL grand final in their second season.

The club has one of the strongest female programs in the league, with under-11s, 13s, 15, and under-18s teams as well. Their under-18 side made the grand final last year.

Grunden said they were looking for new players of any ability to join the club, having lost some players to retirement and others who are testing themselves at VFL level.

“We are looking to recruit more players,” he said.

“We encourage and support any new players coming down and wanting to have a go. We’re looking to develop locally in Keilor.”

Meanwhile the club announced on Monday night, that women’s coach John Tate had stood down from the role. Tate was appointed late last year, replacing Emma Kerry who has moved into the VFLW.
