Keilor Little Athletics Club kicked off its season on Saturday morning with a host of youngsters hitting the track in search of personal bests and gold medals.

The club is one of the first in the state to begin training and competing this season.

Committee member Pauline McShanag says everyone at the club is excited, with a number of athletes already focusing on the coming relay championships.

“Our relay teams are training already,” she says.

“The Little Athletics relay program pretty much starts now and goes right through to the state championships in December. We have a lot of teams at our club and we feature prominently in our region and at state level.”

Keilor will run a special twilight event this Friday night before resuming Saturday morning competition for the rest of October.

McShanag is encouraging anyone interested in becoming involved in Little Athletics to contact the club.

“One of our mottos is ‘Where dreams begin’,” she says.

“Because kids can start from five years of age, we see that as a forerunner to a number of different avenues.

“The other tag line is ‘Family, fun and fitness.’ Little Athletics is a great chance for families to spend time together, have fun and get involved long term in athletics or other sports.”

One former Keilor junior who embraced the, ‘where dreams begin’ motto is current AFL player Mark Blicavs.

Before he began dominating in the ruck for Geelong, Blicavs was an outstanding long-distance runner.

McShanag says a number of former Keilor members have made the transition into other sports, while others have turned their hands to umpiring.
