Sunshine Heights anoint power of three

Sunshine Heights has unveiled a three-person coaching panel that will guide it into the future in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association.

The Heights appointed Luke Simpson as senior coach, Wayne Miller as coaching director and Akat Mayoum as development coach.

Heights president Nick Hatzoglou said he was proud all three were home-grown products.

“All three coaches have all commenced their cricket at the Sunshine Heights Cricket Club,” he said.

“In addition to winning matches, the emphasis on continuing to build on the great culture of the club is paramount.”

Simpson was already entrenched as a leader at Sunshine Heights having been the captain and assistant coach.

The first XI wicketkeeper will take over the senior coaching position from Tim Mahoney, who was at the helm for the past three seasons, including leading the top side to the semi-finals last summer.

Simpson is a third generation captain of the Heights, following in the footsteps of his father Tony and grandfather Frank.

Miller has enjoyed an incredible journey since he won four premierships as a junior at Sunshine Heights.

Miller has represented Footscray at Premier Cricket level and coaching the South African team at the AFL International Cup on two occasions.

Mayoum, who is of South Sudanese heritage, has a proven track record in development to be the perfect fit for the development coaching role.

His success as coach of the Western Region Junior Cricket Association’s under-16 representative team was demonstrated by his ability to build a healthy rapport with the players, as well as delivering results on the field.

“We feel we have a great blend of experience and youth with these three appointments,” Heights vice president cricket operations Matthew Shawcross said.
