Gutsy Parkers grab flag

Deer Park pulled off a stunning come-from- behind victory to secure the Bowls Victoria pennant division 1, section 3 premiership on Sunday.

The Parkers were down by seven shots against second-placed Glenroy with two ends remaining and all hope of securing some silverware seemed lost.

But Deer Park launched an incredible fightback to tie 81-81 and send the game into extra ends.

With the momentum on their side, the Parkers then outscored Glenroy to win 88-81.

Deer Park coach Gavin Niclasen said it was an unbelievable comeback from his side.

“Glenroy are a very good side and we battled it out all day with them,” he said.

“Once we got to extra ends, I was pretty confident.

“As it turned out, each of the four rinks all won the extra end.”

Deer Park will now progress to the division finals and take on the premiers of the other three sections.

The Parkers will go into the draw to play either MCC, Croydon or Bundoora, with the winners of the two matches to be promoted automatically.

But Niclasen explained that whichever club drew Bundoora would be guaranteed promotion.

“Bundoora already have a team in premier division and you’re not allowed two sides from the same club in the same division,” he said.

‘“So whoever draws Bundoora will be promoted, win or lose.”

There was more good news for Deer Park at the weekend, with the division 7 team securing promotion to division 6.
