Green Gully Cavaliers have parted company with senior coach Arthur Papas and his assistant Shaun Ontong.

Papas has resigned immediately to accept a coaching position overseas.

It is not the first time Papas has departed the Cavaliers mid-season to coach internationally, having left in the middle of last season to coach in the Saudi Pro League.

Papas’s departure comes on the back of a poor run in the league for Green Gully.

The Cavaliers endured a dismal July, losing all four games and scoring just one goal in the process.

Green Gully has appointed Stephen Downes as coach for the remainder of the season.

Downes was a significant part of the Cavaliers’ 2011 title-winning team and 2013 Dockerty Cup triumph.

He was the Jimmy Rooney Medal winner for best-on-ground in the 2011 grand final and player of the year in 2013.

Downes will take charge of his first game as coach tomorrow night against South Melbourne at Green Gully Reserve.
