It was a rollercoaster of emotions as Grand United won through to the Victorian Turf Cricket division 3 grand final series.
The ladder leaders were pushed for a large chunk of the game by the Williamstown Imperials, with the Gorillas having to dig deep to come away with the win.
Gorillas president Alan Hale said the bowling from both teams was the best he had seen at season.
The Gorillas batted first and were bowled out for 139 with four balls remaining. They had been behind the eight ball after being 3-11.
Hashan James top scored with 33.
“It was a bit below par, but we are always in with a chance with our bowling attack,” Hale said.
“That was the best bowling we had faced all season.
“We pride ourselves on batting our 40 overs, but after losing a few early wickets our lower order guys were able to respond.
“One of our strengths is that we almost bat down to number 11.”
The Gorillas bowlers were keen to make sure they would get through to the grand final and pulled out their best bowling performance of the season.
The Imperials were bowled out for just 67, with two players reaching double figures.
Thilan Welithota and Matthew Hayes took three wickets each.
“We bowled and fielded exceptionally,” said Hale.
“It was our best performance with the ball and in the field, we rose to the occasion. The semis are the hardest game to win.”
The Gorillas will face Footscray United in the best-of-three grand final series.
All three games will be played at Parsons Reserve. Hale said there was no place like home.
“Grand United has been one of the clubs the last 20 to 25 years with a strong successful history.
“We have a massive opportunity to add to that next week. We’ll play to the best of our ability and hopefully it’s good enough.”
