Grand United will honour a club legend as it kicks off its Victorian Turf Cricket Association season next Saturday.

Jason Sposito, who played a number of roles at the club and within the wider sports community, died in September.

With the cricket season getting underway next weekend, the club along with Mr Sposito’s family will host a Jason Sposito Tribute Day.

Gorillas president Alan Hale said the club had wanted to honour and remember their mate.

“He was at our club for more than 20 years,” he said.

“He played at the club, he was a junior coach, he worked behind the bar and cleaned. He was a real unsung hero at the club.

“Post playing, he became an umpire in the Williamstown and District Cricket Association and then the Victorian Turf Cricket Association.”

Mr Hale said Mr Sposito would still pop into the club after umpiring to catch up with his mates. He was also an umpire in the Western Region Football League.

A minute’s silence will be held before the first XI game at Parsons Reserve against Sunshine Heights.

After the game players, umpires and supporters within the cricket community are invited to the club, to share their memories and stories of Mr Sposito.

Mr Hale said there would be a video tribute to Mr Sposito and Jason Sposito medals will be awarded to the best player in each of the grades.
