Good Friday football returns

Good Friday football is returning to the Western Region Football League next year.

In what is likely to attract a big crowd in division 1, St Albans will host Hoppers Crossing on April 15.

The match is one of several big ones revealed as part of the league’s men fixture release on Thursday.

The division 1 and 2 seasons will get underway on April 2, with the division 3 season to start a week later.

In division 1, Caroline Springs will start its season against Deer Park, while Altona plays Spotswood and Sunshine hosts Hoppers Crossing.

In division 2, Albion will start its season on the road, facing West Footscray, while in division 3, Braybrook will host Laverton, Albanvale plays Tarneit and North Sunshine play the Suns. Sunshine Heights won’t kick off its season until April 23, with a bye in round one and then the Easter break.

The Anzac Day weekend will feature a number of big matches.

Spotswood will host Altona under lights on April 23, while there will be three matches played on Anzac Day.

In division 2, Point Cook Centrals will take on Albion, while Braybrook will again host an Anzac Day clash, hosting the Suns in division 3.

Rivals Hoppers Crossing and Werribee Districts will play on Anzac Day in division 1.

Three division 3 games are scheduled to be played over the Queen’s Birthday weekend, while that weekend will serve as a bye for divisions 1 and 2.

The division 2 grand final is set down for September 3, the division 3 grand final on September 10, with the season concluding with the division 1 grand final on September 17.

The women’s football fixture will be released next year.
