Cairnlea finish on top in nine-goal thriller

A lack of goals has frustrated Cairnlea supporters this season, but their patience was rewarded in a pulsating 5-4 win over Banyule City in a Football Federation Victoria state league 1 bottler at Cairnlea Park on Saturday.

The Reds stormed back from 2-1 down at half-time to move four points clear of the relegation zone.

Adrian Boglis scored in the first half for Cairnlea before Amarah Kromah and Kemal Irdem fired in second half doubles.

There were goal aplenty in the Saturday evening match between Westgate and Sydenham Park, when they finished 3-3 at Ardeer Reserve.

As entertaining as the game was, the result saw both sides slide further away from the top two.

North Sunshine Eagles continued their red-hot form with a 3-1 win over Yarraville Glory at Larissa Reserve, while Western Suburbs edged out Altona East Phoenix on the road at Paisley Park.

Keilor Park sunk to a 2-0 loss to title contender Preston Lions away at BT Connor Reserve.

In the NPL, Green Gully had to be content with a share of the points in the 1-1 draw with relegation-threatened Northcote City at John Cain Memorial Park.

Jay Davies scored Gully’s equaliser in the 44th minute, four minutes after Michael Karvouniaris put the hosts in front.

The Cavaliers remain firmly entrenched in the top six ahead of a trip to Port Melbourne Sharks on Friday night.

It will be another busy week for the Cavs, who will play their Dockerty Cup semi final against Hume City at Knights Stadium on Tuesday night. Melbourne Knights will feature in the other semi-final against Bentleigh Greens at Jack Edwards Reserve on July 13.

In NPL 2 west, St Albans beat Eastern Lions 2-1 on the road with goals to captain Ryan McGuffie and Luis Covarrubias, while Sunshine George Cross was rolled 3-0 away at Goulburn Valley Suns.
