Hoppers Crossing claimed a major scalp in bringing down Altona by 11 points in a hard-fought Western Region Football League division 1 encounter at Hogans Road Reserve on Saturday.
The in-form Warriors have strung together three wins in a row to move back among the contending teams.
While the Warriors are still in fifth place, they are just one game and percentage behind a logjam of four teams – Deer Park, Spotswood, Altona and Werribee Districts – with 7-2 records. Hoppers Crossing’s victory came on the back of its water-tight defence.
The Warriors only needed nine goals for a winning score because it held Altona to just seven in a stellar defensive performance.
Hoppers Crossing will be keen to make it four wins on the trot when it hosts St Albans at Hogans Road Reserve on Saturday.
One of the big losers of the weekend was Werribee Districts.
The Tigers tumbled from second to fourth as a result of the musical chairs among the top four sides on the ladder.
It was all going to plan for the Tigers, leading Spotswood by six points at half-time at Soldiers Reserve. After half-time, they were out-gunned 13 goals to five to lose by 46 points.
Wyndhamvale had a rough outing, going down to Deer Park by 191 points.
Unless there is a dramatic change of course, the Falcons look bound for the wooden spoon this season.
In division 2, Point Cook cruised to an 84-point win over Newport Power, while Manor Lakes put up a good fight before going down to North Footscray by 33 points.
In division 3, Wyndham Suns won the top-of-the-table clash over Point Cook Centrals by 19 points, while Glen Orden went down to Sunshine Heights by 14 points.
