Local clubs still in FFA Cup contention

The Melbourne Knights will take on National Premier League rival the Oakleigh Cannons in round five of the FFA Cup.

The teams were matched at a draw ceremony last week.

Scheduled for later this month, the match looms as one of the tightest of round five.

After six rounds of the NPL season, Oakleigh is in sixth place on the ladder and the Knights are sitting on seventh.

Brimbank-based clubs are well represented in the knockout-based FFA Cup.

Green Gully is a favourite to advance after drawing state league 2 outfit Geelong.

Geelong has enjoyed a giant-killing run that has included upsetting NPL2 side the Moreland Zebras in round four.

Sunshine George Cross (NPL2) faces a tough task against the highly rated Port Melbourne Sharks (NPL).

St Albans (NPL2) has a great chance to advance after being drawn against state league 1 outfit Yarraville.

The Saints have happy memories of the FFA Cup after progressing to the competition’s round of 16 two years ago before being beaten by A-League side Perth Glory.

Meanwhile, Hobsons Bay-based side Altona Magic will have to be at its best when it takes on NPL powerhouse South Melbourne.

The Magic, which plays in state league 1, will carry a lot of momentum into the clash after an encouraging pre-season and strong early-season form.

Altona Magic is one of the favourites to win the state league 1 title.

Round five FFA Cup games will be played on Wednesday, April 20.

NPL and state league clubs will continue to battle it out against each other until round seven, after which A-League clubs will be introduced into the competition.
