Taylors Lakes is keen to ensure it has an attractive pathway for its girls in the Essendon District Football League.
Having fielded two girls sides last season, the Lions are looking to add an under-18 girls and a senior women’s team next year.
Club secretary Julie Chitsos said it was important to have avenues open so the girls could progress as players.
“We’ve got a lot of girls going up into under-18s,” she said. “And they’re keen to go again.
“We’ve also got a lot of mums of the younger kids who are keen to join the senior team.”
The club’s women held their first training session on Wednesday night last week, along with the under-15 and under-18 sides.
Chitsos said the club was looking for players of all abilities to join the team and was also continuing its search for a senior coach and an under-18 coach.
At the junior level, the Lions have had plenty of interest in all three sides.
The under-13 team is already at capacity, made up of returning and new players.
The under-15s are well on their way to having a full team, while the club has
got close to having half an under-18
team.

Chitsos said the Lions were keen to build on the club’s female impetus for the coming season.
“We started last season with five or six players in each of the 12s and 15s,” she
said.
“We ended up with over 20 players in each part-way through the season.
“Only one girl had played before, so that’s 40 girls who haven’t played football before.”
The under-12 team made it deep into the finals, while the under-15 team didn’t win a match.
Chitsos said that despite the losing record, those girls were among the keenest players in the club.
“They were pumped every week and came off the field beaming,” she said.
“They wanted to start pre-season straight after the season finished.”
