Sunshine Baseball Club director Marc McKenner was destined for a future in the sport from the day his father, Colin, first walked in there back in 1955.
Those first steps sparked a baseball tradition that spans 60 years and three generations at a club that claims to be Sunshine’s oldest.
Colin went on to be an assistant coach of the Victorian under 15 team. At a local level his wife, Kaye, was on the ladies and social committee at Sunshine, also helping out with the club’s books.
Their four children all played junior baseball at the club, with daughter Leanne winning back-to-back division one premierships with Sunshine in the mid 90s. Son Marc represented Victoria and Australia at under 19 level.
Today, he guides the club’s under 12 team, and his wife, Andrea, marshalls the women’s side.
Their four children are also involved as juniors.
“There is no doubt that their grandfather [Colin] would be very proud of the legacy that he has left behind,” club spokesman Glenn Letts said.
Mr Letts is proud that Sunshine BC, which celebrated its 75th birthday in 2013, is known as a family club. He’s hoping the tradition will continue with a new generation of players.
The club will hold a come-and-try day at the Talmage Street diamond on August 21 and 28, from 2-4pm.
