It was a short-lived men’s doubles experience for Williamstown’s Andrew Whittington and Australian compatriot Marc Polmans in the 2018 Australian Open.
Whittington-Polmans made 11th seeded Columbian duo Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah work hard for their victory, but still went down in straight sets 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-4) in 1 hour 54 minutes.
Playing under intense heat on court 13, Whittington-Polmans had their chances in tie break situations of both sets, but Cabal-Farah just had the better composure on the big points to dump the local pair out of the tournament.
Otherwise, all statistical categories were relatively even with Cabal-Farah winning the overall points 86-81.
It was a disappointing result for Whittington, who did not make the main draw of the men’s singles.
Ranked 228th on the ATP rankings, Whittington managed to get past American Michael Mmoh in the first qualifying round with a convincing 7-6 6-1 victory.
But Whittington was brought down by Czech Republic’s Vaclav Safranek in straight sets defeat 6-2 6-3 in just 1 hour 9 minutes.
