Senior footy finals kick off this weekend in the west, and the WRFL’s three divisions are very open affairs.
The once-invincible Deer Park has stumbled in the past month, losing to both Werribee Districts and Hoppers Crossing. Chinks in the Lions’ armour have been exposed, and it will be a feat of character and resilience over the next month if they are to triumph. Division 2 is wide open, and Albanvale is favourite for the division 3 flag.
Much has been said about the introduction of the points system next season. I have my own theory and, let me be clear here, this is my opinion … I’m not speaking on behalf of the WRFL in any way.
I believe the salary cap part of the equation is off the table for next year – and that’s good because I don’t think it should be part of it anyway. I also believe there is much debate over what the right number is in regards to the total points. My view is that, if the point of this is to make the competition more competitive, then you have to build it from the bottom up.
Look at division 1 side Port Melbourne Colts and work out the points it will take them to put a competitive side on the park. That number is the one that applies to all clubs.
My other concern is the allowance given to the team coming up from division 2 – we all know it’s a massive jump. We also know many division 2 players walk because they don’t want to play division 1. Many people forget that the powerhouse of the current division 1 competition, Deer Park, declined to go up in 2009 because they knew it would kill their club. I believe most clubs like the bye in division 1, especially those making significant match payments.
I’m told the players like the bye as well, from the point of view of managing their bodies. I personally think a nine-team division 1 competition has been good, and I’m concerned that 10 teams would really mean three terrible teams making up the numbers. I’m keen to hear your thoughts.
■ What a weekend of local footy, with the WRFL finals starting and Williamstown hosting Werribee in the VFL. Both are assured of finals action, but rivalry always adds some extra spice to games between these two clubs.
