Green Gully snatched bragging rights from its derby with St Albans Saints in the National Premier League soccer at Green Gully Reserve on Saturday evening.
The Cavaliers were in control from start to finish in a 4-0 win, with striker Wade Dekker firing in a hat-trick.
Dekker handed Green Gully the perfect start with a goal from a close range header in the opening minute.
The Cavaliers’ one-goal advantage stood until a minute after the break when Dekker scored again, finishing off a cross from Dylan Smith.
Dekker scored from the penalty spot in the 71st minute before Luke Walker completed the rout four minutes before the end.
Green Gully has moved up to fifth ahead of a trip to take on bottom side North Geelong Warriors on Saturday, while St Albans’ survival chances may be finished if they can’t beat FC Bulleen Lions on Monday night at David Barro Stadium.
In the traditional Melbourne derby, Melbourne Knights went down 2-0 to South Melbourne at Knights Stadium on Friday night.
The Knights are in serious danger of relegation and currently occupy the promotion-relegation play-off spot.
The Knights will be desperate for maximum points when they visit Oakleigh Cannons on Friday night.
In men’s state league 1, North Sunshine Eagles had a resounding 5-2 win over Sydenham Park at Keilor Lodge Reserve.
Relegation-threatened Westgate took a step in the right direction with a 2-1 win over Banyule City. Western Suburbs lost 3-1 to Geelong and Keilor Park was defeated 2-1 by Yarraville Glory.
