Deer Park claims its most prized scalp yet

Deer Park has put Spotswood to the sword in the Western Region Football League division 1 top-of-the-table clash at John McLeod Oval.

The Lions did it ridiculously easy over their biggest premiership threat, running out 76-point winners in a Saturday slaughter.

An awesome first term laid the platform for the Lions assault.

They piled on a scintillating seven goals to one to lead by 40 points at quarter time.

There was no coming back from the shell-shocked Woodsmen from that point on.

Deer Park refused to take the foot off the accelerator though, extending the lead at every change before settling on a 12 goals and change victory.

The inclusion of Jase Perkins seems to have turned the Lions from the premiership favourites to a nigh on unstoppable force.

Perkins has kicked 21 goals in four games, including six against the Woodsmen.

Chris Stewart, Sohrob Ismail and Jake McKenzie – three of the Lions most in form players – were prominent yet again.

Mark Galea (three goals), Shannon Byrnes and James Condos (two each) were great complimentary pieces in the Perkins show.

Any suggestions that Deer Park’s premiership run will stop at four this season might need to be re-thinked.

After an early wobble, the Lions have rattled off nine consecutive wins, taking a win from every single team in the league during the streak.

Deer Park’s game and percentage break at the top of the ladder appears in no danger any time soon.

The Lions will play three teams outside the top five in the next three weeks, starting with a trip to Albion on Saturday.
Albion once again disappointed its fans.

The Cats have shown glimpses of good form over the past two months after a hellish start to the season, but went back to their old ways in a 71-point mauling from Sunshine Kangaroos at Kinder Smith Reserve.

The Kangaroos had a massive 39 scoring shots to 13 and only their inaccuracy spared the Cats from further humiliation.

Small forward Daniel Castellano was crafty for the Kangaroos with six goals.

Nathan Lyons, Chris Atkins and Lachlan Smart were the stand outs on a great day for the Roos.

Mark Polycarpou was tnamed best for Albion, while Kevin Upton was its only multiple goalkicker with two.

While the loss is a setback for Albion’s finals aspirations, it is a massive leg up for Sunshine, who moved two games and percentage clear in the five.

Sunshine can stretch that out further when they meet cellar dweller Wyndhamvale at Wyndhamvale South Oval on Saturday.

In division 2, Albanvale slumped to its third straight defeat, losing to Newport Power by 30 points at Robert Bruce Oval.

The Cobras led by five points at half time, but were out-played 10 goals to five in the second half.

David Azzopardi was the Cobras most influential with three goals.

Irrespective of the result, it was a memorable day for the Cobras, who celebrated the 400-game milestone of current reserves player Michael Spatolisano.

Spatolisano, a 25-year player at the Cobras, has won a senior premiership, a senior best-and-fairest and captained the club.

In division 3, Sunshine Heights went down by five points in a thriller to Wyndham Suns at Goddard Street Reserve.

The Dragons started strongly with a three goals to nil opening term, but the Suns had pegged back the deficit by half time.

Trailing by 16 points at the last change, the Dragons mounted a late comeback, but fell short by a kick.

Robbie Greto and Keelan Privitera booted three goals apiece for the Dragons.

North Sunshine fought hard against ladder leader Parkside, but still went down by 40 points.

The Roadrunners, led by Ricky Lane, could only manage six majors for the game.
