City West Falcons’ hold on the unofficial title as the Victorian Netball League’s strongest club is undiminished.
Their championship side suffered a heartbreaking grand final loss but the Falcons’ division 1 side won back-to-back titles at the weekend.
Their under-19 side was knocked out in the preliminary finals.
The Falcons were one of two clubs, along with DC East Blaze, to have all three sides make the finals.
Falcon head coach Marg Lind said the overall season had exceeded pre-season expectations.
“A one, two and three finish across the grades is a good result,” she said.
In the division 1 grand final, the Falcons fired late against Boroondara Express.
Only one goal separated the teams at the three breaks.
The Falcons made savvy line-up changes late in the game, producing their best quarter for a 56-49 win.
Falcons’ co-captain Emily Post was named best on court.
Lind said it had been a difficult season but she was pleased with how the club as a whole had responded to the challenges.
She said the club had given a number of younger players opportunities.
“To get two teams into the championship and division 1 grand finals was excellent,” she said.
“We lost a few players to Ballarat after the selection process, which really affected all the teams.
“It was really a test for us and has been a constant battle. Credit to the staff to get them to this point and credit to the girls who have worked really hard.
“From that point of view, it’s been a good year, but it would be nice to get the championship.”
