Despite being at the wrong end of the Western Region Football League ladder, Albion is taking a number of positives from its 2015 season.
While the Cats have only one win, the club has continued to throw its support behind a youth policy it hopes will deliver the next premiership.
As the season draws to a close, signs of improvement are starting to show. In the past fortnight, Albion has pushed finals-bound Altona and been competitive against St Albans.
Cats president Gavan Taylor said there were plenty of encouraging signs from the season.
“Our kids are starting to get 30 or 40 games under their belts, and it’s looking good,” he said. “It’s just the consistency that is hurting us – it seems to be a quarter here and there, or 15 minutes of a game. Apart from that, we’re more than competitive.
“A lot of the time, we have been in positions where we’ve won the other three quarters, it is just that one period where they score eight or nine goals.”
In what has been a tough year, Todd Finco has continued to build his reputation as one of the WRFL’s best young players. Finco has played 14 matches this season and been named among the Cats’ best players on 10 occasions while also booting 15 goals.
While unlikely to recruit any big names in the off-season, Taylor said the Cats would look to secure a few experienced local-level players.
“We have a few old Albion blokes, who we are hoping to get back,” he said. “The kids need a bit of a hand, and an extra ruckman or a centre- half back would make a big difference; all of a sudden, we’re a different side.”
Albion has requested expressions of interest for its head coaching role, currently held by Aaron Tymms.
However, Taylor said he expected Tymms to remain in the job.
“We do it every year,” he said.
“It would be remiss of us not to have a look at what is around.
“But I would assume that Aaron would coach us,” Taylor said.
