Caroline Springs spoil St Albans party

Club stalwart Craig Brown was one of St Albans’ best in his 400th game, capping a solid outing with a goal.

Unfortunately for Brown, the Saints could not get the job done on the scoreboard, going down by 15 points to Caroline Springs in the Western Region Football League division 1 at Kings Park Reserve on Saturday.

The Saints were anaemic in the first half, kicking just one goal to half-time.

They at least showed some fight in the second half, in particular a five-goal final term, but the horse had already bolted.

St Albans has fallen to second-last on the ladder, while Caroline Springs notched back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

The Lakers will be gunning for three straight wins when they travel to Hoppers Crossing on Saturday.

Josh Mellington looms as a potential match-winner for the Lakers.

Mellington has kicked bags of six and seven goals in the past two weeks.

St Albans travel to ladder leader Werribee Districts on a seven-game losing streak.

An undermanned Albion pushed Werribee Districts all the way before going down by 13 points on Saturday.

The Cats led by 17 points at quarter-time, but gradually saw their lead disappear throughout the game.

Sunshine is the only side that can disrupt the top four and it is looming large in the rear view mirror.

The Kangaroos, last year’s runners-up, slaughtered Wyndhamvale by 114 points to make it six weeks without defeat.

Deer Park was missing a number of key players and it showed in a 10-point loss to Hoppers Crossing.

The Lions loss, coupled with some other results at the weekend, sees all top five clubs on an equal amount of wins –eight – in one of the tightest races for the finals in years. In division 2, Albanvale struggled to find an avenue to goal in a 38-point loss to Newport Power.

The Cobras have just one win from 11 games. In division 3, Sunshine Heights struggled offensively, kicking just four goals in a 35-point loss to Point Cook Centrals. It was a common theme of the day for local clubs with North Sunshine managing just two majors in a 131-point loss to Wyndham Suns.
