Caroline Springs goes pink

Women in sport and breast cancer awareness will be the focus for Caroline Springs Football Club when it embarks on two days of footy and fundraising later this month.

The club, which is fielding a senior women’s side for the first time this year, will incorporate a Pink Sports Day into its annual ladies day on Saturday, May 20, with all players wearing pink socks and pink trim on the V on their tops.

Lakers president Dean Ellis said raising money for breast cancer awareness was an obvious idea for the club.

“We try to raise money for a different charity each year, and we have a ladies day each year, so this year – with our first women’s side – it was the perfect chance to raise some money for Breast Care Network Australia,” Mr Ellis said. “With all the attention that women’s footy has received in the past six months, it’s been great for the club to, first of all, get a senior women’s side to complement our junior girls’ sides, and then to raise a bit of money for a good cause.”

The women’s side will play on the Friday night to allow the players to attend the ladies day festivities, while the men’s side, which features former AFL players Brian Lake and Adam Cooney, will play at home on the Saturday afternoon against Altona.

“We have Brian and Adam’s wives both in our women’s side, so it’s a pretty star-studded line-up,” Ellis said. “It’s going to be a big weekend that’s for sure.”
