Calder United’s hopes of a fourth straight Nike F.C. Cup remain alive after a 2-0 semi final win against Box Hill United on Sunday.

Returning to the field in their first official match since July, Calder produced a strong performance to seal a grand final spot against South Melbourne this weekend.

Calder coach Mark Torcaso said the result was exciting after what had been a tough few weeks getting ready for the match.

“It’s been a difficult four weeks,” he said. “That’s all the preparation we had for a competitive game.

“We normally have 10 to 12 weeks. It has been quite challenging. The girls during the game realised much more preparation they needed.

“But they were true professionals.”

Torcaso said the group was excited to just get out on the field and play. They were able to hit the front in the first half.

The win was sealed with 10 minutes to go through captain Aleks Sinclair.

Torcaso said there was plenty of emotion once they sealed the result.

“We were quite comfortable,” he said.

“I don’t think our keeper had to make a save. We were never in doubt of losing the game, but there were a few nervous moments.

“Captain Aleks Siclair scored a cracking goal to seal the game with 10 minutes to go. The emotion, relief of the whole season came out in that goal.

“It was a really weird feeling. Aleks came over to celebrate with me.”

The match was a chance to give some of Calder’s younger players an opportunity at the top level.

Torcaso said there was mixed performances from them, but they all played their roles.

He said he would take no expectations in the final against South Melbourne, but a win would mean so much after the last couple of years.

“It’s great to have a competitive game that people can come and watch,” he said.

“Last time we played them, there was quite a crowd.

“It’s a great opportunity for both teams to play in front of a crowd and just play football.

“They are one of the best teams in the competition. It’s hard to gauge where both teams are at off four or five weeks training.

“It will be who wants it more on the day.”

The final is at CB Smith Reserve in Fawkner at 4pm on Sunday.
